Name: Syaoran Li

Fandom: Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles

Age: Syaoran’s age is never explicitly stated in the manga. Fan speculation has him at the age of fourteen, however it has always been my belief that as a well learned professional who is in charge of an important archeological dig in the world of Clow he would have to be older than that - at least sixteen.

Canon point: The canon point I will be apping Syaoran from is after they leave the world of Piffle and enter the world of LeCourt. After entering a library with thousands of books, Syaoran accidentally views Kurogane’s traumatic past while looking at The Book of Memories. After viewing the memories he passes out, and instead of waking up surrounded by his friends in LeCourt, would regain consciousness in Pleasantville.

Personality: Syaoran Li is a young man who has shouldered many responsibilities in his lifetime, and has learned to take them in stride. He is a celebrated archeologist in his home world of Clow, and even at his young age it is implied that he has been given a leading role in excavating an important historical site. His professional abilities are bolstered by his genuine interest in learning about the people whose culture he is uncovering. He has an independent nature that masquerades as being overly private – if he feels that he can take care of a problem himself he is likely to refrain from mentioning the problem to other people and hide it away until he can find a solution or pretend it didn’t happen. Quite often in the series he is scolded by his friends for hiding things from them, when he instead just wants to make sure he doesn’t bother them. His inquisitive nature gives him an air of innocence that is undermined by his intuitive and observant demeanor - he understands that people do horrible things, but never stops believing that they will do good if given the choice as it is what he would choose to do in their place.

In his travels to find the lost memories of his childhood friend Sakura, scattered across different worlds in the form of intensely powerful magical feathers, Syaoran has shown a strong will, tenacity well beyond his years, and a determination that cannot be measured. He is intensely loyal to Sakura, and Nothing can stand in his way - not merely because of his love of Sakura, but because Syaoran is, unbeknownst to himself a clone created by a maniacal magician in order to heartlessly gather the feathers. However, when he was created, the person he was cloned from gave Syaoran a piece of his heart in order to help Syaoran create a heart of his own. At the point I’m taking him from, Syaoran is starting to get vague ideas that something is not quite right. The normally very active young man finds himself to be more and more lethargic, sleeping more and spending his dreams looking at an alternate version of himself that seems to be imprisoned. It leaves Syaoran wary and on edge, as he is unsure of what his dreams mean.

Despite this, he has managed to cultivate a tender heart that is intensely moved by the plight of others. Time and time again he is drawn into other people’s battles because he feels that they are suffering unjustly, like in the country of Koryo when Syaoran helps to overthrow the local governor who is cruelly oppressing his people. His loyalty and dedication is something he hands out quickly, but stands by fiercely. He is as willing to fight until the end for a stranger who has convinced him of their need, if indeed their need is valid. Not only is he moved by the sadness of strangers, but of close friends as well. When he accidentally views the tragic past of his traveling companion Kurogane – who he views as a mentor – while looking at a magical book he is moved to tears, greatly affected by the sadness. It is after this that Syaoran is taken from his traveling companions and whisked into Pleasantville by Loki’s machinations.

It is my belief that due to being pulled as he had been into this world, the connection he had with the original him would have been disrupted. Thanks to that disruption, the heart that Syaoran had been given would have been lost and Syaoran’s personality would have gone into ‘shock’ from being so completely separated with the original owner of his heart. When he is first turned loose in the country of Clow as a child, Syaoran acts like an empty child. He has no memory of before the time he was created and feels very little emotion until he slowly discovers who he is and what he can feel. Because of this, I think that during the first part of his time spent in Pleasantville, Syaraon would have been very similar to how he was in childhood, and a hollow echo of what he had previously been. However, because he has years of memories to draw upon, he will have the capability to slowly develop a heart of his own. After which, he would regain the full personality he once had. In the remaining time Syaoran – used to traveling through different worlds – would quickly come to terms with the fact that he was alone in a strange world, and immediately try to find a feather and his friends. Upon not finding either, his resolve would strengthen, and he would vow to do whatever he had to in order to find Sakura, Kurogane, and Fai.

Powers/Abilities: Syaoran has proved himself a martial artist of some ability, primarily focusing on the usage of kicks, and recently in canon he has been learning the basics of how to use a sword from Kurogane.

Prose sample:

A lean muscled arm shot out to equalize his balance, as on the other side of his body he his kicked leg upwards in the air at a nearly impossibly high angle. He threw the weight of his upward leg sideways then let his body follow the momentum to land on the first foot, now able to swing out his other leg in a devastatingly fast motion. The youth practicing by himself on a quiet black top had a look of resilience in his eyes as he went through the familiar movements, sweat dripping down the back of his neck, but Syaoran Li kept pushing himself for one reason.

He was alone.

It had been a hard realization to come to, but Syaoran had never been the type of person to pretend things weren’t as they really were. The indicators were all there. The world of Pleasantville hadn’t experienced any unrest in the time the Syaoran had been in it, nothing to the scale that one of Sakura’s feathers would cause, anyways. On the contrary, the young man had found this world to be… unpleasantly stagnant. Everyone here was strangely young, ruling out that Kurogane and Fai were here somewhere, and oddly enough – everyone was male. Aside from those oddities, things didn’t change, and it had his skin crawling – made him wonder when the other shoe would drop.

He found solace when he went off alone, finding abandoned ‘playgrounds’ to train in, keeping his skills sharp for the eventuality that he would have to use his skills to protect himself and those around him. There was comfort in the familiar motions as well, though. As he worked his body to its limits, ever trying to expand them, Syaoran could let his mind comb over all the things he had learned so far, as well as remember the people who gave him the drive to keep looking. He’d focus on the gentle way that a single smile from Sakura could make his entire body feel like he was floating, he would struggle to emulate the quiet way that Kurogane could constantly be moving forwards when he had so much sadness he could be thinking of instead, or how Fai could smile even though Syaoran could tell there was a deep hurt lying just beneath the surface.

Syaoran’s entire body shifted and he leaned forward and threw his weight, so that he landed on one of his hands. He then kicked out with both of his legs, twisting them around to use their motion to flip himself into a standing position. The look of determination in his eyes never faltered. He had to get out of Pleasantville, he had to find the others, he had to. For Sakura. He had to, because…

“Syaoran-kun is my most precious childhood friend.”

As he hit his landing the young man felt the slip of gravel under his feet, and he fell backwards on the ground, the memory of when those words had been spoken to him causing him to falter. He found himself staring at the beautiful blue sky as he caught his breath, his chest heaving and aching from his fall, “Sakura…” he whispered as he reached up to the sky with a tired and sweaty arm, fingers splayed as if to catch the after image of the girl he’d always cared so deeply for.

“…I’ll find you, I promise”
